Thinking about switching to natural deodorant? You’re not alone. By now, we’ve all heard of the possible downsides of traditional antiperspirants. They’re typically made with aluminum, which actually plugs up your glands to keep the sweat inside your body. This sounds good in theory, except that humans are meant to sweat. It’s our body’s method of regulating our temperature. It’s also a major method of detoxification, since sweat helps eliminate waste and toxins. Read: it’s good to sweat!

Obviously, the downside to sweating is the, ahem, stank that comes with it. While sweating is great for us, B.O. isn’t doing anyone any favors. Enter natural deodorant. Unlike antiperspirant, which stops your body from sweating all together, deodorants help are more than enough to prevent B.O. So do your body a favor and make the switch! But before you do, there are a few things to know.

Tips for switching to a natural deodorant:

1. The “transition period” can get a lil stanky.

Because you’ve spent years essentially plugging your armpits with aluminum, when you finally remove that blocker, your body has some major werk to do. It will release the built-up waste (including some actual aluminum) and lead to two or three pretty smelly weeks as you detox. So when you first make the switch, you might feel like your natural deo isn’t doing a thing. In reality, it’s just your body working very hard to expel those toxins. We promise it’s very temporary and very worth it!

2. Clay masks are your friends!

There is an easy way to minimize body odor and shorten the length of the overall detox. Clay underarm masks are a game changer as they can help remove antiperspirant buildup. As more and more people transition to natural deodorant, brands are coming out with products made just for such an occasion. Look for one that has the trifecta of detoxifying ingredients—charcoal, clay, and exfoliating acids—to help your body readjust faster.

3. Choose a superstar natural deo.
