The skin on your feet is touched and used every single day. Even if you spend the whole day watching Netflix and ordering takeout from your couch, you still pad around on the hardwood floors of your apartment. That’s why it’s so important to protect the skin in this area. Not only is it likely overlooked by your skincare routine, but “the skin on the feet have important features that include autonomic and sensory nerves,” explains Naz Wahab, MD, medical advisor for the wound care management company RedDress. “Both types of nerves are needed for the function of the feet,” so keeping them hydrated and healthy with a foot cream is your best bet to maintaining foot health throughout the years.
If you have no idea where to start, we’ve rounded up the top 12 foot creams with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and tea tree oil to pick up today. Use them to keep your feet looking healthy, strong, and beautiful for years to come.
Naz Wahab, MD, is a medical director for Mountain View Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center in Las Vegas. She is also a medical advisor for the wound care management company RedDress.
”The skin on the feet can become thick and cracked due to the pressure of the weight of our body on the feet,” says Dr. Wahab. “The inability to maintain a good pH balance and sweating ability can lead to the overgrowth of fungus on the feet.”
If your feet are already damaged, reach for a product that contains urea, says Dr. Wahab, like DR. SCHOLL’S Severe Cracked Heel cream, which contains 25 percent urea to help exfoliate.
You’ll want to reach for a foot cream that does not promote the growth of fungus in this highly sensitive area. To do so, Dr. Wahab suggests looking for ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or tea tree oil, which are natural antifungals. Luckily, this cream from BURT’S BEES contains coconut oil and vitamin E to soothe dry soles.
This cream has a medium-rich formula that coats the skin on the feet and encourages repair with alpha hydroxy acids that help dry skin shed from the surface. This formula will also help boost collagen production to heal and repair the skin on the feet.
There’s nothing worse than applying a cream to an extremely dry area, and then five minutes later feeling like you never applied anything at all. That’s why this cream from O’KEEFFE’s is so good: It actually works to create a protective shield on the skin’s surface, giving you lasting hydration that helps to prevent future moisture loss.
This foot cream contains 10 percent urea, which is a recommended ingredient from Dr. Wahab, plus five perfect salicylic acid to help encourage shedding of dead skin to reveal softer, more supple skin.
When you pair your foot treatment with moisture-locking socks or booties overnight, you’ll encourage the product to penetrate the skin deeper by allowing it to remain on the skin longer. This cream is perfect for overnight wear and contains avocado oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter for extra hydration.
Sometimes dry skin can lead to irritated skin, which is why you need a cream that can protect against itchiness and further irritation. This GOLD BOND foot cream includes three vitamins that each have a different function in protecting your feet. There’s vitamin C that works as a natural antioxidant to protect against further environmental stressors, vitamin E to lock in moisture, and vitamin A to help reveal brighter-looking, healthier skin.
Newsflash: When you have diabetes, you’re even more prone to moisture loss in the hands and feet. To combat this, consider reaching for this formula, which leaves out fragrances and parabens, and includes urea, bilberry, and ceramides to replenish moisture after just the first use.
Lactic acid is another ingredient that Dr. Wahab recommends for tackling thick, dry, cracked skin. This cream from AMLACTIN contains 15 percent lactic acid that gently exfoliates and removes calluses with continued use.
Removing dry, calloused skin won’t be beneficial in the long run if you don’t continue to hydrate your feet. Enter: This formula by THE CHEMISTRY BRAND, which helps hydrate dry skin on the surface and even penetrate underneath it so you can break the calloused-skin cycle. With ingredients like caprylic/capric triglyceride to penetrate deeper and soybean oil to soothe, this cream can be your next go-to if you’ve been struggling with dry skin for more than just one season.
Squalane is a powerhouse ingredient that helps hydrate skin that’s been inflamed due to severe dryness. It’s found both naturally and can be manipulated in a lab. This cream uses squalane, plus argan oil to help prevent environmental factors, and manuka honey, a natural antibacterial substance that helps replenish moisture into the skin.
This formula works for all skin types and uses natural broccoli seed oil, thyme oil, and camphor wood oil to replenish dry and tired skin. Haven’t heard of camphor oil? It comes from the camphor tree, which helps soothe skin irritation and helps naturally prevent the growth of bacteria in the applied area. Bonus: This cream can be used several times a day, so hydrated feet are never too far away.
