What is it about winter that means everything has to change? Sure, we welcome the change of swapping barely-there tank tops for chunky, cozy sweaters to watch holiday movies in, but what’s with all the changes that happen to our skin? It seems like just as soon as the temperature drops below 40 degrees, our faces start to peel ever so slightly, and everything starts to feel tight and itchy.

According to esthetician and founder of SISH Beauty, Gabrielle Harrison, your dry skin in winter months isn’t in your head, and it can’t be fixed by an old wives tale. “Dry skin can’t be addressed by drinking more water and/or applying heavier moisturizers,” says Harrison. But, she says, you can alter your skincare routine to get to the root of the problem. Here are all of Harrison’s go-to tips for dealing with dry skin, and how to make your skincare routine reflect exactly that.

Meet the Expert

Gabrielle Harrison is an esthetician and founder of SISH Beauty.

1. Best Cleanser for Dry Skin:

TATCHA The Rice Wash Soft Cream Cleanser

Harrison recommends reaching for a gentle cream cleanser if you have dry skin. Plus, she says, “You’ll want to minimize how frequently you cleanse. I recommend a maximum of two times per day.” If you have extremely dry skin, keep the cleansing to just once per day.

We love TATCHA’S The Rice Wash Soft Cream Cleanser for gentle yet effective cleansing. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid to add hydration back into the skin, and is paired with Japanese rice powder to help nourish the skin.

2. Best Serum:

FIRST AID BEAUTY Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid

If you have dry skin, it’s all about product layering to make sure your skin is really absorbing the ingredients needed to combat dry skin. After cleansing, Harrison recommends a hyaluronic acid serum. We love this one from FIRST AID BEAUTY that has hyaluronic acid and colloidal oatmeal to soothe irritated skin. Plus, we love that this serum is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

On Ipster wrote that this serum “doesn’t break out or irritate my skin, and it hydrates without being greasy at all.” That’s a win in our book.

3. Best Oil for Daytime:

SCENTUALS Healing Beauty Oil Duo

During the daytime, Harrison recommends a different oil for dry skin than the nighttime oil she recommends. For day, she likes anything with vitamin E. Vitamin E not only helps heal broken and irritated skin, but also helps revitalize dry skin. Plus, it’s a natural antioxidant which will help protect your skin through whatever it encounters, like UV rays and pollution. We love this oil from SCENTUALS that can be used on hair and skin throughout the day.

4. Best Moisturizer:

KOPARI BEAUTY Moisture Whipped Ceramide Cream

Ceramides are a must when dealing with dry skin. That’s because they help seal moisture in the skin and help restore the skin’s overall barrier. This moisturizer keeps your barrier locked and moisture-loaded for up to 72 hours after application, and Harrison says ceramides will be your best friend when dealing with dry skin.

5. Best Sunscreen:

JOSIE MARAN Get Even Sun Milk SPF 33 Broad Spectrum Mineral Sunscreen

When dealing with dry skin, let your ceramide-rich moisturizer do the heavy lifting and reach for a lightweight SPF. Even in the winter, you want to make sure you’re wearing SPF daily, and this JOSIE MARAN sun milk is ultra sheer and lighter than air, which means it won’t weigh down your skin, feel heavy, or clog pores. One Ipster wrote that it has zero white cast and a “moisturizing dewy finish [without being] greasy/sticky at all.”

6. Best Exfoliator:

PURLISSE BEAUTY Kale + Vitamin Exfoliating Face Polish

If you have dry skin, exfoliating regularly is essential. “One of the biggest mistakes people with dry skin make is not exfoliating,” explains Harrison. “If you have dry skin and you’re not exfoliating, the dead, dry skin will continue to accumulate, which blocks moisturizers and other products from absorbing.”
We love this face exfoliator from PURLISSE BEAUTY that one Ipster says, “clears off all the dry flakes and leaves my skin smooth for makeup application.” If you prefer exfoliating once a week. Harrison recommends her brand’s in-shower treatment.

7. Best Oil Cleanser:

EVEREDEN Nourishing Facial Cleansing Oil

For nighttime routines, Harrison recommends double cleansing and starting with an oil-based cleanser that’s packed with jojoba oil, like this cleanser from EVEREDEN. Jojoba oil is known for restoring the skin barrier as well as helping with oil control. Start with this cleanser and follow it up with a gentle cream cleanser after.

8. Best Night Serum:

111SKIN Y Theorem Repair Serum

At night, you need a reparative serum rather than a protective serum like the hyaluronic acid serum mentioned above. This is because your skin actually heals and repairs itself overnight as you sleep, so you want to add something a bit more powerful into your p.m. skincare routine. This serum penetrates deep into the skin’s surface for quick results, helping to promote the production of glutathione, which in turn helps repair damaged skin.

9. Best Night Cream:

IT COSMETICS Confidence In Your Beauty Sleep Night Cream

Nighttime also calls for thicker moisturizer that’s packed with, you guessed it, ceramides. This one from IT COSMETICS is a stand-out because it also helps promote cell turnover as you sleep. One Ipster said it “had almost gel-like consistency that was cool to the touch and felt nice to rub into my skin.”

10. Best Body Cream:

REFRESHMENTS Velvety Body Cream

When it comes to dry skin, more than just your face needs TLC. That’s when we reach for this REFRESHMENTS body cream. It’s formulated with grapeseed oil, olive oil, and shea butter for all-over hydration. Plus, these ingredients are natural and non-irritating. One Ipster says it has “the perfect thickness to it where you actually feel moisturized but not sticky or slimy.”

11. Best Lip Treatment:

HANALEI COMPANY Lip Treatment

Kukui nut and shea butter are the stand-out ingredients in this lip treatment that can be worn overnight to reveal soft, supple lips by morning. We love that it also has antioxidants so you can wear it in the daytime underneath your SPF for added protection. One Ipster says, “A little goes a long way, so the tube lasts a long time. It’s super hydrating. I can put some on before bed and wake up with the product still there and my lips super soft.”
