In the past, sunscreen has received a bad rap for being thick, greasy, and leaving a pale white cast on the skin. But today, whether you opt for a chemical sunscreen or physical sunscreen, you'll find that most sunblocks (and moisturizers with SPF) soak into the skin right away and look invisible on the skin. This skincare essential should be a non-negotiable in everyone’s skincare routine; it can help to defend against skin cancer, sunburn, and free radical production, and signs of premature aging. Even if you have acne-prone skin, you should be sporting sunscreen every single day. Those with this skin type may just want to look for certain ingredients and types of formulas.
Below, we'll dive deeper into what those with acne-prone skin should look for in a sunscreen. Plus, we're sharing 12 of the best sunscreen formulas for this particular skin type.
Hadley King, MD is an NYC-based board-certified dermatologist who specializes in medical and cosmetic dermatology.
Rachel Nazarian, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Dermatology.
“Breakouts are commonly caused by emollients, fragrances, or preservatives in sunscreen,” says Hadley King, MD, an NYC-based dermatologist. “Those with acne-prone skin should look for non-comedogenic products and mineral ingredients, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide." She adds that she typically likes to use SPF 30 or higher for daily protection.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-based formulas are commonly referred to as physical sunscreens. These formulas are less likely to clog pores or irritate your complexion. “Avobenzones, benzophenones, oxyphenones, methoxycinnamate, and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) are all common ingredients in chemical sunscreens that can cause pimples in sensitive, acne-prone skin,” says King. He adds that chemical sunscreens are more likely to cause allergic reactions and irritations for those with sensitive skin or hyperpigmentation issues.
A number of skincare products for acne can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. That's why wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen is super more important. “Certain acne medications increase sensitivity to ultraviolet light, such as certain antibiotics, isotretinoin, or topical retinoids,” says Rachel Nazarian, MD, Proactiv expert and NYC-based dermatologist. These medications decrease the layer of dead skin cells on the surface, making us “more sensitive to sunlight and more susceptible to burning,” she says. The more sensitive we are to the sun, the more likely it is we’ll suffer from sun damage.
Not only can your skincare regimen make your skin more sensitive, but the sun’s UV rays can also darken acne scars making them more prominent. “Ultraviolet radiation can increase redness and dark spots that are associated with old acne pimples and increase the time it takes for them to fade,” Nazarian says.
If you have acne-prone skin, don't sleep on the power of vitamin C. The antioxidant-packed vitamin can help to treat active breakouts, fight free radical damage, and brighten up the skin. While this daily moisturizer will definitely protect against sun damage and boost glow, those brightening powers can also work wonders to lighten up dark acne scars, helping to create radiant, breakout-free skin.
"Fresh smelling and soft on the skin," one Ipster says. "It never breaks me out and does a great job on my dry skin."
