While we've seen stints of the mullet and modern shag, there’s no question that TikTok-popular curtain bangs have dominated the majority of the pandemic. And we totally get why. The former biggest hair trend is flattering on varying face shapes and hair types, and it easily elevates dull hair. The look is also low maintenance and simple to style. But with each new year comes new hair buzz, and 2022 is no different. The haircut trend of the moment? Bottleneck bangs.

The so-called daintier baby sister of curtain bangs is a look coined by holistic U.K. hairstylist Tom Smith. While Smith gets credit for naming the trend, it’s actually Margot Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett who debuted bottleneck bangs. Robbie turned heads when she appeared with Scarlett’s new haircut on the August 2021 cover of British Vogue. Other celebs have since jumped on this bangs trend, including Dakota Johnson, Kaia Gerber, and Lily Collins. If you want to know more about the bottleneck bangs hair trend (and whether or not it’s for you), keep scrolling.

Meet the Expert

Lovette Candice is a hairstylist at trendy Los Angeles boutique salon, 454 North. Her cuts and coifs are on regular display among social media’s biggest stars, including Stassie Karanikolaou, Nessa Barrett, and Jaden “Jxdn” Hossler.

What Do Bottleneck Bangs Look Like?

If you’re torn between traditional full fringe, blunt bangs, and curtain bangs, consider bottleneck bangs your in-between. “Bottleneck bangs are soft, longer bangs that split in the middle,” says celebrity hairstylist Lovette Candice of the face-framing look. “They’re lightweight and wispy, forming an upside-down V shape in the top middle of the forehead. They’re narrow at the top and get wider as you go down. They're literally shaped like the neck of a bottle.”

How Do You Style Bottleneck Bangs?

When it comes to effortless hairstyling, you’re in luck with this look. The style fits multiple eras and moods, and it’s not difficult to achieve. Candice’s preferred method of styling is with a flat brush. After brushing the bangs all the way down, she suggests grabbing a flat iron and giving the bangs a little C-shaped bend. FOXYBAE HAIR Mini Straightener is ideal for on-the-go styling, and is designed for taming, smoothing and waving.

“This will add a little volume, making them look so effortlessly done,” says Candice. “Give it a little texture spray and play around with the vibe. You can do a French girl moment, ‘70s, baby doll, and even a little rocker.”

What to Ask Your Hairstylist For?

When it comes to any fresh look, the same thing holds true: Photos are the best way to get what you want in a salon. And “when you show them pictures,” says Candice, “Make sure you point out specifically what you like so those parts can be adjustable to your hair and face shape.”

What Face Shapes Are Most Flattering With Bottleneck Bangs?

While certain bang styles are meant for particular face shapes, such isn’t the case here. “Bottleneck bangs are more adaptable to all face shapes,” says Candice. “These bangs can be tailored to flatter your face by adjusting the length and thickness of the bang to fit with your face shape and bone structure.”

Bottleneck Bangs vs. Curtain Bangs

When it comes to bottleneck bangs versus other styles in general, it sounds the former is the way to go. “They’re lower maintenance and more free-flowing than any other bang,” says Candice. “They’re cute, short, and soft for your face.”
