Sometimes you just want to nix the mascara and hit the salon for classic lash extensions. When it comes to eyelash extensions, length over volume is typically what you get. But what if you want full, voluminous lashes that are also long, wispy, and romantic? Can you have it all? Yes! It’s all about hybrid lash extensions.

Hybrid eyelash extensions are pretty much what they sound like: a combination—or hybrid—of classic lash extensions and volume lash extensions. And somehow, they look like your natural lashes. Sounds like a dream, right? Say goodbye to mascara, lash lifts, eyelash curling and the works. Here’s everything you need to know about hybrid eyelash extensions right from a professional lash artist (plus tips for removing your eyelash extensions when they’re ready to go).

Meet the Expert

Dionne Phillips is a celebrity makeup artist, eyelash extension expert, and founder of D'Lashes.

What Are Hybrid Lashes?

Think about hybrid lashes as a combination of two techniques. “Hybrid lashes are a combination of classic single extensions and full lashes together,” Phillips says, “[They] give the clients a desired look of full lashes yet simple and classic.” She explains that this can be single hair extensions layered or a mix of fans and clusters. It also depends on who you see. “All hybrid lashes vary with the technique of the lash artist and her version of a hybrid lash,” she adds.

What Should I Expect From My Appointment?

Phillips stresses the importance of a consultation with your lash artist to be clear about the look you desire. This ensures you won’t leave with the wrong lash set for your eye shape and desired look. Then, get ready to sit still for a full two hours. The process is a bit meticulous, but it needs to be to ensure a safe application. You’ll close your eyes and your lash tech will test a few sizes on you. Then, they’ll apply a skin-safe tape to the bottom lash line to keep them out of the way. Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt. Then, the lash tech will apply the eyelash extensions one-by-one to individual lashes with tweezers.

Price varies depending on where you live, the lash artist's experience, and types of eyelash extensions. Generally, you can expect to pay between $120 and $300 about every eight weeks, with approximately an additional $70 to $100 for maintenance infill.

Hybrid Lashes vs. Classic Eyelash Extensions

You now know hybrid lash sets look voluminous and long, while classic lashes just have the length. But the application process is different for both, too. “Classic lash extensions appear to be very natural looking, with the lash artist applying one single extension hair one at a time to your natural lashes in different sizes on a single hair,” Phillips says.

On the flip side, with hybrid lash extensions, multiple extensions are applied per each natural lash. This creates that volume folks crave. There is some customization that can be done, so be sure to talk to your lash artist in detail about what you want from your lash look.

What Are the Benefits of Hybrid Lashes?

If hybrid lash sets are a bit more expensive and time-consuming than classic lashes, why get them at all? Well, there are some great benefits to hybrid lashes:

• You get much more volume than with classic eyelash extensions.

• They’re still more natural-looking than volume eyelash extensions, which deliver mega volume with less length.

• Hybrid lashes are much more dense, Phillips explains, which fills in gaps you might have in your natural lashes.

How to Take Care of Your Hybrid Lashes

Aftercare is so important when it comes to any lash enhancement—whether you’re getting a lash lift, tint, or false lashes—to ensure the best lash retention.

1. Don’t get your new false lashes wet for the first 48 hours to give the glue enough time to dry.

2. “When you wet your lashes, they tend to have a longer retention,” Phillips says, so be sure to gently rinse your lashes daily with a gentle cleanser — after the 48 hours — to remove any eye gunk from the night before.

3. Though some lash artists disagree, Phillips tells her clients to, “Only brush your lashes when they appear to be a little tangly and unruly,” instead of every day, in order to minimize shedding.

4. Don’t wear mascara or get a lash lift while wearing lash extensions.

5. Try to sleep without pressing your face into the pillow. It can be hard, but you don’t want to damage or break your new eyelash extensions.
