Finding the right skincare routine is important for everyone, regardless of skin type or gender. Though it might be intimidating at first, a solid skincare ritual doesn’t have to be complicated, and spending a few minutes on yourself each day will pay off in the long run. Whether you’re looking for practical tips for beginners or recommendations on the best products to support healthy skin, we’ve got you covered.

Meet the Expert

Dr. Leela Athalye, D.O., is a medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist based in Orange County, California.

Skincare Tips for Men

1. Cleanse First, and Cleanse Daily

No matter how simple (or elaborate) your skincare routine is, you should always start with clean skin. Using a cleanser first will help rinse away any residue—like sweat, grime, or product buildup—and allows all the products you use after to absorb properly and take their full effect. Cleansing daily will also help you prevent clogged pores and breakouts

That said, cleansing your face after exercising is vital too (even if you washed your face earlier). A post-workout wash will help clean out sweat and oils that cause clogged pores. Make sure to keep any skincare tools clean as well. Dermatologist Dr. Leela Athalye, D.O., recommends cleaning your razor with rubbing alcohol to prevent irritation and ingrown hairs.

2. Plan Your Routine Around Your Skin Type

It’s important to know your skin type and use products accordingly. Are you oily all over, or just in certain areas? Do you find your skin to be tight and dry? Maybe you’re none of the above—or maybe you experience these issues on top of having sensitive or acne-prone skin. Regardless of your situation, try building a regimen that works with your skin.

If you’re not sure where to begin, Dr. Athalye recommends starting with a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. She also recommends using a retinoid at night to help prevent breakouts and smooth fine lines. “Less is more—you don’t need a scented product or a super-expensive one,” Dr. Athalye adds. “Stick with basics that contain important ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid.”

This Wonder Ceramide Mochi Water Cream from TONYMOLY is a great option, since it’s packed with ceramides to keep your skin nourished and hydrated. If you’re looking to simplify your routine, however, try reaching for something like this Perfecting Day Cream from MURAD, which comes with built-in SPF 30 and powerful antioxidants, which will help protect your skin from damaging UV rays and environmental aggressors like pollution.

3. Wear SPF Daily

Wearing SPF daily—even in the winter or on cloudy days—will help you protect your skin year-round. UV rays are the biggest culprit behind hyperpigmented skin and wrinkles, so while daily SPF might seem excessive, it’ll actually help you years down the road.

Dr. Athalye warns you should “never skip sunscreen,” since blocking out UV rays will help your skin fight signs of aging and keep skin from getting irritated. Incorporating SPF into your morning regimen will help ensure your skin stays firm and bright for decades.

4. Don’t Skip the Doctor

Seeing a dermatologist at least semi-annually will help you meet your skincare goals—and make sure you’re up to date on your skin’s health. A dermatologist can help you address issues like acne, eczema, hair loss, and even questionable moles, so it’s important to proactively schedule a visit before your problems progress into more serious ones (like skin cancer). Try to visit your dermatologist twice a year to get ahead of your skin health.

5. Elevate Your Shaving Habits

Shaving can irritate your skin, so it’s important to make sure your razor is kept clean, among other things. It’s recommended to change your razor every six to eight shaves, and prep your skin with warm water and a pre-shave oil. “Shaving is best with moist skin,” says Dr. Athalye, who recommends incorporating a shaving gel into your routine.

Slow, steady razor stokes in the direction of your hair growth will give you a smooth shave, and following up with a cool splash of water will help calm skin and close pores. Try finishing up with a refreshing moisturizer to help keep your skin smooth and hydrated.

6. Address Pimples as Soon as They Pop Up

If you can see or feel a blemish on your skin, act immediately—but don’t touch or pop the pimple, as this will make it worse. Instead, opt for a spot treatment, like this Salicylic Fix Clay Mask from NIP+FAB. With ingredients like salicylic acid and clay, it’ll help soak up excess oils and help chill out any redness and irritation.

According to Dr. Athalye, other skincare ingredients to look for are benzoyl peroxide and adapalene, both of which she says can be helpful for acne. If you act fast with a spot treatment, you can even prevent acne scarring or a worsened pimple.

7. Don’t Over-Exfoliate

Routine exfoliation keeps your skin smooth and even-toned, but there can be too much of a good thing. No matter if you exfoliate with a physical scrub or chemical retinoid, make sure not to overdo it—otherwise, you'll be irritating your skin over helping it. Twice a week should be enough to encourage skin rejuvenation, and as always, pay attention to how your skin is feeling, since everyone’s skin is different.

8. Be Consistent

We’re all guilty of expecting overnight miracles when it comes to skincare, but the truth is that results only come with consistency. The most effective skincare will be the one you keep up with, so make sure your everyday routine is manageable.
