If you’ve ever been interested in injectables to see a quick and effective transformation in your skin—but just don’t want to put an artificial ingredient into your face—PRP, or platelet-rich plasma injections, could be the treatment you’ve been searching for. PRP injections essentially use your own plasma to redirect collagen growth in other areas of your face. And one of the most popular areas for PRP injections happens to be the under eyes.

Experts and recipients of this treatment tout that PRP injections for dark circles are effective, are long-lasting, and require minimum downtime. If you’ve been searching for a way to look just a little more awake, and if caffeine-packed eye serums just aren’t cutting it, PRP injections could be a great option. To find out more, we tapped doctors and injectors to learn everything you need to know about PRP injections for the under eyes.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Meet the Expert

Rukmini Rednam, MD, FACS, known by her patients as the Confidence Doc®, is an esteemed board-certified plastic surgeon serving the communities of Houston and The Woodlands, TX. She specializes in procedures for the face, breast, and body.

Paula Brezavscek, PA-C, is an expert injector and the founder of AZALA Skin Clinic in Miami, FL.

What Is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, and it’s a treatment that injectors and dermatologists use to enhance the skin’s appearance in certain areas. “Think of PRP as your skin’s natural booster shot,” explains Paula Brezavscek, PA-C, an injector and founder of the AZALA Skin Clinic in Florida. “It’s a treatment that uses your own blood to kickstart collagen production, improve skin texture, and refresh tired under eyes. After a quick blood draw, the platelets (your body’s repair crew) are separated and injected back into the under-eye area, helping to brighten dark circles and smooth fine lines—all without fillers or harsh chemicals.”

The fact that you are injecting your own plasma and not a filler or chemical makes this treatment appealing to a broader range of clients.

The IRL Benefits of PRP Under-Eye Treatment

How do you know if you’re a good candidate for PRP under-eye treatment? Well, according to Brezavscek, if you’ve been getting a solid eight hours of sleep for weeks and still look tired, PRP treatments could be the fix you need.

Here are a few benefits of the treatment:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: According to Rukmini Rednam, MD, FACS, a dermatologist and plastic surgeon based in Texas, the natural anti-inflammatory properties in PRP are what helps minimize the appearance of dark circles.

  • Collagen-building capabilities: Thanks to the stimulation of the production of collagen, the skin under the eyes may appear smoother and more hydrated, and therefore, less wrinkled.

  • Offers a refreshed look: If you rely on concealer to look awake, PRP fillers can help reduce the appearance of inflammation, puffiness, and dark colors under the eyes overall.

Know Before You Go: How to Prepare for a PRP Under-Eye Treatment

Dr. Rednam recommends going in for a consultation with a qualified injector to see if the PRP treatment (a minimally invasive treatment) will get you the results you need, or if surgery might be a better option. “It is generally recommended that you do not get this treatment if you have an important event in the next seven to 10 days to allow time for any bruising and swelling to subside,” she says.

Additionally, Brezavscek recommends hydrating before your treatment, avoiding “alcohol and blood thinners (like aspirin or ibuprofen), and showing up makeup-free.” She also notes that “a healthy diet and good sleep help too.”

What a PRP Under-Eye Treatment Is Really Like

If you have a low pain tolerance, you can still get PRP treatments. Your injector will likely offer to numb the area first, and if they don’t, you can certainly always request it. “The treatment involves a quick blood draw, a spin in a centrifuge to separate the PRP, and tiny injections under your eyes,” says Brezavscek. “Some people feel a slight pressure or tingling sensation, but it’s over in minutes. Think of it as a few moments of discomfort for weeks of glow,” she says.

If you’re worried about your vision since you’re injecting so close to the eye, Dr. Rednam says this isn’t a concern. During “the first 12 to 24 hours, you may be more aware and have a more unusual feeling under the eye, but at no point is your vision affected,” she notes. “Often, the unusual feeling is secondary to anesthesia, less so to the volume. There is generally little to no pain. Afterwards, there is some mild soreness that can be expected.”

Any Side Effects to Worry About?

Since PRP injections come from your own body, there are no major side effects to worry about. “Most negative side effects come from injection, meaning from safety issues with injection as well as placement,” explains Dr. Rednam. “The biggest risk is vascular occlusion, which can lead to blindness if not properly treated. However, with an experienced injector and the use of the cannula (injection tube), this is an extremely low risk.” She also notes that any swelling or bruising will be both normal and temporary, post-treatment.

Brezavscek also notes that if you have a blood disorder, blood clotting issues, an infection, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid this treatment and consult your doctor about these issues.

What Results Can You Expect?

The best thing about PRP injections is that results can last anywhere from 12 to 18 months, with the peak results being visible at around six months, explains Dr. Rednam. This is due to the fact that you have to give the collagen stimulator that you just injected into your face the time to grow actual collagen. “A series of two to three treatments (spaced about a month apart) gives the best results, so think of it as an investment in your future glow,” says Brezavscek.

The Cost

Although PRP injections are pricey, they do last for a full year, which should be considered in your decision to get the treatment. “The average cost is approximately $1,000 per treatment,” says Dr. Rednam. “Some people will desire more than one treatment, approximately three months apart as needed, for the desired effect. Many benefit from a single treatment in the under-eye area.”

Aftercare Treatment

The aftercare for PRP injections is similar to Botox injections. “After treatment, skip makeup and workouts for 24 hours to avoid irritation,” explains Brezavscek. “Keep the area hydrated, avoid excessive sun exposure, and always wear SPF,” she says.

And don’t forget that mild bruising and swelling is totally normal. Drink lots of water and keep up with your regular skincare routine, being sure to confirm with your provider that everything in that routine will interact well with your treatment.

Final Thoughts

PRP is a great option for targeting dark circles, but there are also PRF fillers that turn your own plasma in a similar process. “I think that PRP has a lot of benefits; however, for facial rejuvenation, my preference is PRF, which, like PRP, is derived from our own whole blood, but formulated to provide the release of growth factors over time,” says Dr. Rednam. Make sure to ask your provider about both PRP and PRF treatments to see which one might be best for you and your desired results.
